A Student Reflects on Finals Preparation

Posted on October 31, 2023October 31, 2023 By admin

As the semester draws to a close, the impending finals week casts a long shadow on the calendar of every university student. It’s the final obstacle, the final stretch of the marathon, and it comes with its fair share of tension and strain. However, with some forethought and patience, I’ve discovered that the finals beast can be tamed. Here’s a look back at my path to the finals, peppered with some critical ideas that kept me afloat.

1. Start Early, Start Small: Procrastination is a student’s worst enemy, and I learned it the hard way. I realized starting early with a small, manageable chunk of study material each day made the entire process less daunting. The earlier you start, the more time you have to revisit and revise.

2. Create a Realistic Study Schedule: A well-organized study schedule is a lifesaver. I allocated time slots for each subject, factoring in breaks and leisure time. It’s essential to be realistic about how much you can cover in a day, to avoid burnout.

3. Utilize Active Learning Techniques: Passively reading through textbooks never really worked for me. Instead, I embraced active learning techniques like summarizing information in my own words, creating flashcards, and engaging in group discussions. These methods made studying more interactive and less monotonous.

4. Seek Help When Stuck: Whenever I found myself stuck on a particular concept, I reached out to professors or classmates for clarification. It’s crucial not to let doubts pile up, as it can hinder your understanding and slow down your progress.

5. Practice Past Exams: Practicing past exams was a game-changer. It helped me understand the format, the type of questions asked, and the areas I needed to focus on more.

6. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Eating well, exercising regularly, and ensuring I got enough sleep were essential for keeping my mind sharp and ready to absorb information. It’s not just about hitting the books but maintaining a balanced lifestyle to perform at your best.

7. Manage Stress: Finals are stressful, but managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or even short walks helped me keep a clear head and stay focused on my goals.

8. Stay Positive: Lastly, maintaining a positive outlook, celebrating small victories, and keeping the bigger picture in mind helped me push through the tough days. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and every step you take gets you closer to the finish line.

Preparing for finals is a difficult endeavour, but with the appropriate strategy and a resilient mindset, it is a hurdle that can be overcome. And as I approach another finals week, equipped with these tactics, I’m ready to face the challenge head on.
